Regeneration and enterprise
Challenge
Bradford is the sixth largest city in the country, with a population of 485,000 and is the fastest growing metropolitan district outside of London. In two of the city's most exciting yet economically-deprived areas Manningham and Girlington and Trident/Comp Camberwell won a competitive tender to deliver its self-designed GRID centres to drive regeneration through enterprise.
Implementation
More Bradford residents aspire to start up a business than anywhere else in the Yorkshire and Humber region. The GRID has built on this culture of enterprise, encouraging new businesses and supporting growing companies. The two GRIDS provide high-quality, flexible, pay-as-you-go business accommodation alongside powerful networking opportunities and workshops with tips, best practice and advice for new-start entrepreneurs and established companies.
Hosts for each GRID support and nurture the development of members who pay from as little as 10 per month for five hours a month access. All members including those who do not pay a fee are part of a vibrant business development network which encourages inter-trading and learning. Established business leaders provide ongoing one-on-one mentoring to support and nurture fledgling entrepreneurs.
Benefit
During the first year of the GRID operation it has assisted over 500 members, made up of both existing and new businesses who inter-trade among each other. The GRID neighbourhoods are also benefiting from increased entrepreneurial activity.
